“Community, to establish community in the Middle School” says Guidance Counselor Mr. Brad Rasmussen when asked to sum up the purpose of the Middle School Blaze Retreat.
Last week, July 20-21 the middle school students gathered to participate in the Blaze Retreat. This years Blaze differed greatly from lasts and established a new system for the middle school to be organized. The students were divided into 4 groups each containing students from sixth, seventh and eighth grade. These groups were called Council houses, each Council House going by a different cherokee name. There was Wadulisi: Council House of the Bee, Awhoali: Council House of the Eagle, Kawi: Council House of the Deer, and Tsiya: Council House of the Otter.
Each Council House has a legend accompanying it. Tsiyas legend describes the joyousness and humanitarian instincts of otters. Eighth Grader and member of Wadulisi Hayden Ricketts said “ I think that the Houses help all of the students by mixing them together so that you don't just have one grade.”
In their council houses the students played games, participated in team building activities, created flags for their houses, as well as performing chants and dances. All of the students went home with a different approach to the life skills and a brand new middle school community.
